Program Description

Event Details

There is no better way to share your passion for reading, learning, and teaching than to have a bookish visit with others in your field! You are cordially invited to join this group--specifically designed for academic librarians--in reading and discussing Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James Lang.

In this second edition, Lang introduces a series of nine strategies for improving student learning. These small but powerful changes have proven to make a big difference--and many of them can be put into practice in a single class period.

Not sure how to reflect as you read? Try these questions, or better yet, bring your own reactions and ideas!

  • What are some of the advantages of the small teaching approach over larger changes?
  • How has your understanding of student learning changed after reading this book?
  • What small changes might you make in your interations with students and why?
  • What is your role as a librarian or instructor in helping students make connections in their learning?
  • What questions or ideas do you have after reading this book that you'd like to share?

Our gift to you! A copy of this book--compliments of SCKLS-- will be mailed to you at your library about a month before the event so you have plenty of time to read, enjoy, reflect and be ready to join our lively discussion. This book discussion will be moderated by Fiona Holly, SCKLS technology consultant, and former academic librarian.
