Program Description

Event Details

In libraries, the First Amendment comes into play in various contexts, including meeting spaces, book challenges, and even interactions with YouTube First Amendment auditors. To gain a deeper understanding, let's explore the First Amendment and its relation to libraries, their collections, and the public's access to them.

Join Daniel Pewewardy, Wichita Public Library adult literacies librarian and ALA Law for Libraries trainer, to delve into how the freedoms outlined in the First Amendment fit in your library and strengthen your community.

In this webinar, you will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of how libraries function as designated public forums under the First Amendment
  • Explore court cases related to censorship in libraries
  • Learn strategies for addressing First Amendment-related issues in libraries, including:
    -  Meeting room policies
    -  Book censorship challenges
    -  First Amendment auditors

Guest presenter Daniel Pewewardy is an Adult Literacies Librarian at the Wichita Public Library. He has a Masters in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma (2012) and in 2024 accepted a training position for the American Library Association’s Law For Librarians Train the Trainer Program.
