Program Description

Event Details

For many library staff the most perplexing question should be the easiest: “I need a good book. What should I read?” Patrons still use the library for the collections, yet it may seem difficult to talk to patrons about their preferences. Especially when you can't possibly read ALL the books yourself.

Discover the magic of readers' advisory! Join expert Kaite Stover, Kansas City Public Library, to build your confidence and revitalize your enthusiasm for helping patrons find joy in reading. In this workshop, discover the elements of a book that appeal to readers, as well as how to talk to patrons about their preferences and guide them to their next satisfying read.

In this webinar, you will:

  • Explore the different elements of a book
  • Learn how these different elements appeal to readers
  • Discover how to listen to patrons talk about their preferences and respond with confidence

Guest presenter Kaite Stover is the Director of Readers' Services for The Kansas City Public Library. She holds Master's degrees in Library Science and English Literature from Emporia State University. Stover is the co-editor of The Readers' Advisory Handbook (ALA Editions, 2010). From 2004-2016, Stover wrote the "He Reads, She Reads" column for Booklist with David Wright and wrote "Under the Radar" for Public Libraries from 2012-2017. Stover is a founding member and on the Steering Committee for LibraryReads. She is the recipient of the 2018 Margaret E. Monroe Award, 2012 Allie Beth Martin Award, and was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2003. Follow her on Instagram @KaiteStover.
