Program Description

Event Details

Do you take Dewey for granted? Have you wondered if it is the best way to arrange your library? Would you like to learn about other options? It’s the wild west in library classification right now, and no better time to consider how to shelve and arrange your collection with your patrons’ needs in mind.

Join guest presenter Anna Szczepanski from the Colorado Library Consortium for creative, out-of-the-box (and beyond-the-shelf) thinking about how your collection might be organized to benefit your community. You are sure to learn, laugh, and have fun in this interactive webinar with a presenter who is more enthusiastic than anyone should be about classification schemes in libraries.

In this webinar, you will:

  • Explore the difference between the catalog (bibliographic) record and the classification scheme
  • Review a brief history of the evolution of classification schemes
  • Discover new ways to arrange library materials initiated in the past 15 years
  • Find out different ways small and rural libraries are customizing their classification schemes
  • Practice what you’ve learned with discussion and a round of “Where would you put it?”

Guest presenter Anna Szczepanski has over 20 years of experience working in rural public and school libraries in Colorado. She got her MLS from Emporia State University (Go Hornets!). She loves weeding (books, not weeds), cross-country skiing, and her 17-pound Maine Coon cat named Pancho.
